I don’t know today’s Amsterdam Birthday Celebrant very well but I’ve always admired Bill Petrosino. Why? First of all, he and his wife are great parents. They’ve raised wonderful and intelligent daughters who were high-achieving honor students at Amsterdam High School.
I also admire Bill’s entrepreneurship and business acumen. He is the son of the legendary Rug City super-grocers, Lou and Helen Petrosino, the builders and operators of the former Lou’s Supermarket and Discount 30 grocery stores here in Amsterdam. Bill certainly inherited some of his parents’ skills, wisdom and guts because his Bill’s Beverage Center, on the corner pf Park Street and Locust Avenue has been in continuous operation for 37 years, selling Amsterdam’s “cheapest beer” along with soda, ice, tobacco and lottery tickets. I’ve done business there many times over the years and nothing changes. Its a no-frills, low overhead operation and the only place in Amsterdam that does bottle return redemption on an honor system. I considered this practice such a privilege that I went to painstaking lengths to make sure I wasn’t taking advantage of it. I can’t tell you how many times I used to recount the empties crammed into seven jumbo-sized garbage liners for fear I’d be cheating Bill out of a nickel or two.
