May 12 – Happy Birthday Isadore Wasserman

397_2048x2048Julius Wasserman came to America from Germany in 1860 settling first in Schenectady, NY before moving west up the Mohawk River to Amsterdam in 1865. Once here he opened first a clothing store and then a grocery store before winning a contentious spoils system battle to get appointed Amsterdam postmaster by President Grover Cleveland in 1886. Three years earlier Wasserman and his eldest son David had also started a broom manufacturing business on Brookside Avenue. Within the next 25 years, their Amsterdam Broom Company would employ 125 people and turn out four million brooms of all sorts and sizes per year.

He and his wife, a Schenectady native named Caroline Solomon raised a family of seven sons and a daughter. All of the Wasserman boys would join their father and brother in the Broom Company in some capacity, including today’s Amsterdam Birthday Celebrant. Isadore Wasserman was born on May 12, 1874 here in the Rug City. After attending local Amsterdam schools, he went to work for his father and brother.

There was no question that David Wasserman had been the brains behind the company’s success. Another brother, Jacob Wasserman filled the key role of purchasing the broom corn used as the raw material. When Jacob died unexpectedly from a brain tumor in 1914 and Julius passed away three years later, Isadore’s role in the business became much more significant.
