January 31 – Happy Birthday Marshall Lech

lechmarshallMarshall Lech was an Amsterdam original and one of the most active citizens to ever call the Rug City home. He was born here on January 31, 1915 and raised on a farm on Midline Road. He graduated from Wilbur Lynch High School and then pulled rare double duty during WWII, serving in both the Army and the Navy and seeing action in both the European and Pacific Theaters. He had married his wife Hedy just before the War started. A machinist by trade, Lech was a gifted and versatile athlete too. He was a skilled running back for the old Amsterdam Zephyrs semipro football team, a very good bowler, a veritable legend on the handball court and a repetitive gold medal winner as a Senior Olympian. He served as the City’s Fourth Ward Alderman during the seventies and was always willing to lend his support to a worthy cause or organization. The circumstances surrounding an East End traffic accident in the early 1960’s will help you understand exactly the type of person Marshall was…

I’ve already started work on the second volume of “A Year’s Worth of Amsterdam Birthdays” and Marshall Lech’s complete story will be featured in it. I will be sharing the complete posts of some of the Volume II birthday celebrants in future issues of the Amsterdam Birthday Blog Newsletter. If you are not yet a newsletter subscriber, you can sign up for free here.

Also born on this date was this very popular Amsterdam physician.
