December 10 – Happy Birthday Larry Lanzi Jr.

LLanzi2When it comes to Amsterdam, N.Y. Entrepreneurs, today’s Birthday Celebrant is one of a quintuplet of native Rug-City siblings who deserve to be labeled the Fabulous Five of Food. Larry Lanzi and his brothers Lou, Chris, Anthony and Joseph are the sons and grandsons of proprietors of legendary Amsterdam restaurants. Both of those establishments (Lanzi’s Restaurant on Bridge St. and Lorenzo’s Restaurant on Union St.) have long since closed but these five guys have extended their family’s reputation for superb restaurant business acumen to a whole new stratosphere.

According to their Web site, each of the boys began working in their Dad’s restaurant when they were seven years old. Their tasks included mopping floors, peeling potatoes, and washing dishes. As each boy got older, their roles in the business increased until they were pretty much running the whole show at the Union Street eatery and customers wanting a table there were waiting upwards of an hour for one and were happy to do so!

Which is why when the news broke that the brothers had purchased a failed restaurant up on the shore of the Sacandaga Reservoir, lots of folks in Amsterdam thought they had gone crazy! Why risk the gold mine they had that did an outstanding business year-round for a summer-only type business that had already proven its location was no guarantee to success…

You can read the rest of my story about Larry and his Bro’s in my new book “A Year’s Worth of Amsterdam Birthdays.” To order your copy, click here.
