November 13 – Happy Birthday George Lazarou

lazarou2If you’ve been reading my Amsterdam NY Birthday profiles and you are old enough to remember George Lazarou’s weekly column in the Recorder newspaper entitled “A bit of reminiscing” it should be easy for you to understand why I was such a huge fan of today’s Amsterdam Birthday Celebrant. Though he was born in Connecticut, he spent most of his 91 years living in Amsterdam and his ability to describe the first-hand memories he had of special people and events from this City’s past made for delightful reads, especially for an Amsterdam history buff like myself. The third Lazarou sibling to have his birthday recognized in this forum, he may not have had the athletic skills or memorable first names that his brothers Dolly or Costa did but he was far from a slouch when it came to competitive sports. In fact, George was a Gold Medalist in the New York State Senior Olympic Games…
