May 28 – The 44th birthday of two local high school baseball games

MAY28BOXAnother day of no birthday nominations so I thought I’d go back to a May 28th from the past, and see if I could find a story for you. Here’s what I came up with:

On this date back in 1971 the baseball teams of both of Amsterdam’s high schools ended regular seasons during which they won their respective league championships. Looking at the box scores of both games, I recognized so many names. I thought it might be interesting to share my memories of those I remember.

Leading off for Amsterdam that day was Mike Tuman…

You can read the rest of my recollections about these former Amsterdam school boy ballplayers in my new book “A Year’s Worth of Amsterdam Birthdays.” To order your copy, click here.

  1. Ernie Scialabba was a sophomore on the last Scully team for which I was student manager/scorekeeper/reporter. He had the best pick-off move to first I’ve ever seen (to Jim LaBate). No kidding, he AVERAGED two pick-offs per game pitched that season!
