May 22 – Happy Birthday Gary Aldrich

UnknownThose on the far right of America’s political spectrum think Gary Aldrich is a folk hero while those on the left consider him a Bill & Hillary Clinton-hating whacko. If you happen to be in the political middle, you’ve probably never heard of this Amsterdam native. He did not live here long. His grandfather was a loom-fixer for Bigelow-Sanford by the name of Fred Aldrich. He and his wife had four kids, three boys and a girl. Of the four, a son Warren is the only one who ended up leaving the Capital District area, when he moved to Florida with his family in the 1950’s. Today’s Amsterdam Birthday Celebrant is Warren’s son.

Gary Aldrich was already working for the FBI when he met his future wife Nina, who was also an FBI employee. The couple were assigned to Bureau outposts all around the US until 1986, when they came to Washington DC where Gary took on the job of doing FBI background checks of people being considered for government positions that required security clearances. At first, he worked with the US House and Senate in this capacity and then in 1988, at the very tail end of the Reagan Presidency, he was assigned to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, where he conducted background checks of White House aides.  He served in this capacity all throughout the first Bush’s Presidency and during the very beginning of Clinton’s first term, retiring in 1994 with 25 years worth of FBI service…
